How to Hire a Plumber, Cleaner or Other Local Service Provider

Services guide · 4 min read · Updated 20 October 2026

Most local service providers are honest and skilled. A little checking helps you find a good one, avoid misunderstandings about price and stay safe when someone comes to your home.

Compare before you choose

  • Contact two or three providers and describe the job in the same way to each.
  • Ask about their experience, the tools and materials they use, and how long the job will take.
  • Ask for examples of previous work and, if possible, a reference you can call.

Agree the price and scope first

Ask for a quote or a clear hourly or daily rate before work begins. Agree what is included, who buys materials, how long it will take and what happens if the job is bigger than expected. A message exchange that records this is enough for small jobs, and a written agreement is better for larger ones.

Paying fairly and safely

  • Avoid paying the full amount upfront. A small payment for materials is normal; paying everything before work starts is not.
  • Pay the balance when the work is finished and you have checked it.
  • Ask for a receipt for payments, and keep any warranty or guarantee in writing.

Staying safe when someone comes to your home

  • Tell a friend or family member who is coming and when.
  • Ask for the person’s name and phone number, and check they match the ad.
  • Do not let someone in who turns up without an appointment, and do not hand over keys.

If you offer services

A clear ad with the services you offer, the areas you cover, your experience and how to reach you gets more genuine enquiries. Quote honestly, turn up on time and explain any change in price before you do the extra work.
