How to Write a Classified Ad That Sells

Selling guide · 4 min read · Updated 20 October 2026

Buyers scroll quickly and skip ads that are vague or unclear. A little care with the title, photos and description is the difference between an ad that gets enquiries and one that is ignored.

Write a title that says what it is

Put the most important facts first: what it is, the brand or model, and one useful detail. “Toyota Aqua 2016, hybrid, 62,000 km” works better than “Car for sale, urgent”. Leave out capital letters and exclamation marks.

Take photos that show the real item

  • Use natural daylight and a plain, tidy background.
  • Take several photos from different sides, including close-ups of any marks, damage or wear.
  • Make the first photo the clearest, because it is the one shown in search results.
  • Only use photos of the item you are actually selling.

Describe it honestly

Say how old it is, what condition it is in, what is included, and why you are selling. Mention faults upfront. Buyers who feel misled walk away, and they tell others. A frank description saves you from wasted visits and disputes.

Set a fair price

Look at similar ads to see what comparable items are asking. A price slightly under the market can sell quickly; a price well above it will sit. If you are open to offers, say so in the ad.

Pick the right category and location

An ad in the wrong category is hard to find. Choose the most specific category and the correct city so that local buyers can see it.

Reply promptly and stay safe

Answer questions quickly and politely. Meet in a public place, let a friend know where you are going, and do not hand over the item until you have the payment in your own account or in cash. Do not send money or accept an overpayment. Read our guide to spotting scams for more.
